TUPELO – Thomas Jones, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at Care Center in Aberdeen after an extended illness. Mr. Jones was born July 14, 1934, in Savannah, Tenn. to Carl Jones and Pearl Cummings Jones. He graduated from Belmont High School in Mississippi and then entered the Army
in 1952. In 1964, Thomas and Mary Ethelyn Willingham were married, and they enjoyed 49 years together.
Mr. Jones joined the Tupelo Police Department in 1966, and served the people of Tupelo for 20 years as a motorcycle policeman, retiring honorably in 1988. He was very talented with his hands as both a mechanic and woodworker, and one of his great joys was to keep the motorcycles in top shape for the police department. Thomas loved woodworking and spending time in his shop. He was of the Baptist faith.
A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors, with burial to follow at Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today and from noon until service time on Tuesday.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; two daughters, Pam Gipson of Tupelo and Donna Cooley of Lexington, S.C.; two sons, Johnny Jones and Brian Jones (Tina), both of Tupelo; five grandchildren, Sandahl Burleson, Hunter Armstrong, Sterling Gipson, Tara Stallings, and Amanda Hoffkins; and six great-grandchildren, Brookleigh Armstrong, Chase Burleson, Austin Stallings, Olivia Dawsey, Jackson Dawsey and Maxx Armstrong.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Chris; sisters, Katherine Allen and Marie Bohannon; and his niece, Shirley Bishop.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Grisham, Gene Beard, Brad Beard, Hunter Armstrong, Vic Armstrong and Daniel Burleson.
