NEW ALBANY – William ""Jerry"" Gooch, 74, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2014, at home. He was born in Union County to William Cecil Gooch and Hattie Lou Nowlin Gooch. He attended Tippah-Union and graduated from Ingomar High School. He received his B.S. degree from Mississippi College and attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He wore many hats during his lifetime: teacher, pastor, business owner, and director of Finance with the Boy Scouts of America. He also donated his time to Pro-Mississippi, the Literacy Council, chaired the Union County Republican Committee and served as a Scoutmaster. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners, and an elder and faithful member of Cleveland Street Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda Williams Gooch; five sons, William Jeffery ""Jeff,"" Jon ""Michael"" (Jill), Matthew Jerry (Ashley), Mark Walton (Cherie) and Luke Steven (Nicole); a sister, Lydia ""Joye"" Gooch Ewing (Lewis); and 12 grandchildren, Morgan, Jordan, John Matthew, Lauren, Will, Zach, Camerin, Bentlee, Isaac, Malachi, Levi and Hannah.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Cecil Gooch and Hattie Lou Nowlin Gooch.
Service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Cleveland Street Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. United Funeral Service of New Albany is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will lie in repose from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cleveland Street Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church or St. Jude Hospital.
