Clarence Herman Berthay Obituary
NEW ALBANY – Clarence Herman Berthay, 81, died Monday, April 7, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford. He was born Nov. 10, 1932, in Lee County to the late Johnny and Ozelle Berthay. Clarence grew up in Myrtle and graduated from Myrtle High School in 1951. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army. On May 23, 1953, he married Mary Ila Orman of Ashland. Having lived most of his life in New Albany, he retired from the Irwin B. Schwabe Company after more than 40 years. Clarence's all time favorite hobby of ""tinkering,"" and having the ability to fix most anything led him to open a small engine repair business. He was known by many as the ""Lawnmower Repair Man.""
In 1992 when he became a proud grandfather his name changed to "Pop Pop."" Each of the five grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He will be remembered for his integrity and determination, and mostly his respect for others. His ability to talk came very natural to all those who knew him, and he found a friend in everybody, never meeting a stranger. Clarence was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and in many other capacities during his years there. He was a member of American Legion Post 72 and a Mason.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, April 9, 2014, at United Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Harvey Sewell officiating. Burial will be in Glenfield Memorial Park. United Funeral Service in New Albany is in charge of the arrangements.
He is survived by two daughters, Rosemary Gaines (David) of Tupelo and Joyce White (Calvin) of New Albany; and five grandchildren, Hunter Gaines and Spencer Gaines of Tupelo, Matthew White, Joshua White and Mary Margaret White of New Albany.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Hunter Gaines, Mike Berthay, Ricky Robertson, Bobby Shirley, Bill Hix, Gary Allen, Kevin Thomas, B.A. Teague, Billy Mac Daniel, Perrin Drummond and Todd Owen.
Visitation will be today, April 9, 2014, from noon until 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
The family wishes to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of the State Veterans Home for all their love and care given to him, especially D Hall employees.
In honor of Mr. Berthay, United Funeral Service Inc. will fly the flag of the U.S. Army at the funeral home during visitation and service.
