OLIVE BRANCH – Hershell Wilder Huey, 72 formerly Pontotoc, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013. He graduated from Pontotoc High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Navy where he was a Navy Corpsman attached to a Marine unit. While serving at sea in Phillipines, he helped his unit through a typhoon that struck the ship while on an exercise. He was employed at the VA Hospital where he worked 30 years, retiring in 1994. He was an active member of Longview Heights Baptist Church for many years. He served in the pre-school ministry and was loved by so many and will be missed and remembered as "Mr. Hershell." He was a volunteer at the Olive Branch Emergency Food Pantry and Thrift store.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, June Ash Huey; his son, Tim; a daughter-in-law, Sarah; three grandchildren, Emma, Eli and Katie; brothers, Ray, Keith, David and Sammy ; and sisters; Brenda and Sheila; his mother-in-law, Etoyle Ash; in-laws, Sue, Gale, Carol, Johnny, Tommy and Clay; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilder Huey, and his mother, Marie Cruse Huey; and a brother, John.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Longview Heights Building Fund or to Olive Branch Emergency Food Bank.
The family will receive friends at Longview Heights Baptist Church in Olive Branch at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, and funeral services will begin at noon. Interment will follow in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Memphis. Brantley Funeral Home of Olive Branch is in charge of arrangements.
