PLANTERSVILLE – Gwendolyn Gaye ""Gwen"" Cook Holland, 61, died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born in Calhoun County on July 9, 1952, to Betty Jean Lee and Billy Joe Cook. She grew up in Calhoun County, lived in the Mississippi delta (Tutwiler) for several years, and moved to the Tupelo area in 1982. She was a master homemaker most of her life, but was employed several years at North Mississippi State Hospital before her health failed.
An active member of First Baptist Church of Plantersville, where she had a particular interest in Vacation Bible School, she enjoyed crocheting, sewing and cooking for her husband and for extended family gatherings. She loved God's creation, especially her vegetable garden, as well as fishing, boating, camping, traveling and square dancing. Spending time with her grandchildren brought her much pride and joy. She was a loyal assistant to her husband in helping fulfill his responsibilities as a Lee County supervisor, and was proud to be known as the First Lady of the 5th District.
A service honoring her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 2, at First Baptist Church in Plantersville with her pastor, Bro. Danny Balint, officiating and her son-in-law, Bro. Tommy Ray Dabbs, delivering family reflections. Her cousin-in-law, Bro. Bobby Holland, will officiate at the graveside committal immediately following at Holland Family Cemetery on the Sadie J Farm. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors and from 12:30 p.m. to service time Sunday at the church.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Joe Holland, of Plantersville; her mother, Betty Jean Lee Logan (Gordon) of Calhoun City; two sons, Chip Cole (Elizabeth) of Belden and Brian Holland of Nettleton; a daughter, Deanna Holland Dabbs (Tommy Ray) of Nettleton; nine grandchildren, Weatherly, Allie, Emma Kate, Holly Beth, Briley, Benton, Alexx, Blaze and Allison; two sisters, Rebecca Jean McEntire and Sharon Harris (Ricky), all of Calhoun, Ga.; two brothers, William Joe Cook of Vardaman and Steven Lee Logan (Peggy) of Mattson; her mother-in-law, Sadie Holland of Plantersville, and her father-in-law, J.C. Holland of Shannon; and a special friend, Ruth Malone of Nettleton. She was preceded in death by her father; a daughter, Loretta Gwen Cole, on July 4, 1986; a grandson, Cole; a brother, Carl Wayne Logan; and her grandparents, Abner W. and Mary G. Lee, and Will and Johnnie Cook.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Oswalt, Fred Payne, Carroll Pettigrew, Joe Loden, John Albert Leslie, Kevin Burchfield, Brandon Presley, W.T. Park and Joel Fernandez. Honorary pallbearers will be the Lee County Board of Supervisors and staff and department heads, Deacons of First Baptist-Plantersville and the couples II Sunday school class.
