TUPELO – Evelyn Matthews passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center. She was the youngest child of seven children born in Moorehead to Jack and Margaret Davies. She was a member of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. A former employee of NMMC as an O.R. technician, she was a retired nurse practitioner for Dr. James Neeley. She also provided private duty nursing. She was instrumental in establishing the Haven Acres Community Center, where she organized and rallied to have a Boys and Girls Club within the center. She has a special love for children not only in the community, but in family as well. She would open her home and her heart to nieces and nephews. On June 1, 2005, she received the Jefferson Award and went to Washington, D.C., to be recognized. She received further recognition form the city of Tupelo. She was Auxillary Senior Police Officer for the Tupelo Police Department, volunteer worker for the Christian Women Association and served as president of Haven Acres Forever Young.
A celebration of life service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church with the Rev. Lowell Walker Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Porter's Memorial Park with Grayson-Porter's Mortuary in charge of the arrangements. Online condolence can be made to Matthews family at www.grayson-

She is survived by her devoted husband, Clyde Matthews of the home; one son, Joseph ""Dino"" Delbert of Georgia; a special niece, Deborah Wilkerson of Detroit; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Mae Bogley of Holly Springs and Juanita Brooks of Tupelo; her special friends, Geneva Gillard and Vera Green; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and six siblings.
The body will lie in repose from 3 until 5 p.m. today at J.W. Porter's Chapel and will be placed in the church one hour prior to services on Saturday.
