TUPELO – Gary Franklin ""Mustard"" Smedley, 70, died Thursday, May 22, 2014, at North Mississippi Sanctuary Hospice unit following an extended illness. He was born April 7, 1944, in Vandervoort, Ark., to Charles F. Smedley and Minnie Faye Whited Smedley. He was patriotic and served his country for nine years in the U.S. Navy, where he furthered his education in meteorology. He served as a weatherman aboard the USS Kitty Hawk which he helped commission, and the USS John F. Kennedy, both during the Vietnam War. Upon returning from the military, he continued his education at South Oklahoma Junior College where he received an associate's degree in mathematics. He loved and was loved dearly by his family and friends who fondly referred to him as ""Mustard.""

A memorial service celebrating his life will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, in Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with Bro. Bobby Holland officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to service time only.
He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Phillis Smedley; his daughter, Buffy Smedley and son, Justin Smedley, both of Tupelo; sister, Jerry Ann Jewell of Vandervort, Ark.; three nieces, Barbara Walker, Beverly Higgins and Nancy Jewell; one nephew, Keith Jewell; special friends, Ann and Jerry Garrett and Linda Swinney; and a host of other near relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, Charlie and Jenny Mae Smedley.
