SMITHVILLE – The Rev. Benjamin Wax, 71, died on Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at Gilmore Memorial Regional Medical Center. Born on Dec 7, 1942, in Smithville, he was a son of the late Plummer Wax and Wripple Victoria Jackson Wax.

He was a member of Spruell Chapel CME Church. He was a graduate of West Amory High School, completed junior college at Okolona and earned his B.S. degree from Rust College at Holly Springs and his master of divinity degree from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.
He loved his job on the farm raising cattle and watermelons. He enjoyed reading and discussing various points in the Bible. He loved his church family, his own family and grandchildren. A people person, having a big heart, he was passionate about helping people.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Hilda ""Cheerleader"" Wax of Smithville; two sons, Dr. Benjamin (Cynthia) Wax Jr. of Starkville and Christopher Lee (Lasonda D) Wax of Louisiana; two daughters, Shondra Denise Wax of North Hollywood, Calif., and Francis Earnestine Wax of Cordova, Tenn.; two sisters, Mavis H. Hogan of Omaha, Neb., and Emma Shirley Wax (Earnest) Copeland of New York; five sisters-in-law, Winnie Ruth Wax of Amory, Ruth Ann Wax of Amory, Elaine Wax of Omaha, Neb., Wilma Dooley of Tuscaloosa and Patricia Murray of California; two brothers-in-law, John Dooley of Tuscaloosa and Earnest Copeland of New York; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, John Houston, Morrell L., Earnest, Manfred L. and Plummer Leon Wax.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. today, May 31, at First United Methodist Church in Amory with Dr. Jimmy Barnes, Tupelo District superintendent, officiating. Burial will follow in Wax Memorial Garden Cemetery. Darden and Sons Funeral Home in Amory is in charge of the arrangements.
The body will lie in repose one hour prior to service time today.
