VERONA – Mr. James ""Top"" Merritt died on July 13, 2014, at the Golden Living Center. He was born on July 11, 1937, in Tupelo to Virginia and Charlie Wright. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, and served in capacities until his health failed. He enjoyed wrestling. James attended Carver High School and played football with the Carver Blue Devils. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for more than 20 years. He worked at Pennsylvania Tire & Rubber for 13 years. He earned vocational certificates in electricity from ICC.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gloria McKinney officiating. Burial will be in the Verona Cemetery. N.L. Jones Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.
James leaves loving memories with his wife, Gladys Merritt of Verona; his sons and caregivers, Cedric (Valda) Campbell, Dexter (Priscilla) Merritt; granddaughter, Princess Merritt; special nephew, Melvin Campbell, all of Verona; 10 grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home.
