RIPLEY – Phillip Arnold ""Sonny"" Goolsby, 69, of Ripley was born Aug. 12, 1944, to Alvie and Grace Gandy Goolsby. He departed this world to be at peace with his heavenly father on Nov. 2, 2013. He was a member of Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church. Sonny was an active member of his Boy Scout Troop 41 throughout his school years. He obtained the highest rank of Eagle Scout on Sept. 19, 1960. Sonny went on to graduate from Falkner High School in 1962. He left his home and family to become a member of the U.S. Navy on Oct. 9, 1962. During his travel he obtained a National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Vietnam. He stayed active for four years. Sonny returned home on Sept. 26, 1966, within this time he met his loving wife, Judith Jacquline ""Jackie"" Moffitt, and they were wed on July 3, 1967. During their marriage they had a son, Phillip Scott Goolsby and a daughter, Tammy Renae Goolsby.
Sonny was a hard working husband and father, who was a great provider for his family. He made an honest living in construction work, taking pride in everything he did. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, working his garden and spending time with his grandchildren along with family and friends.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jackie Goolsby of Ripley; two children, Scott Goolsby of Ripley and Tammy Harrell (Scott) of Falkner; four grandchildren, Brittany Goolsby of Corinth, Clint Goolsby of Brandon, Chase Goolsby (Kasey) of Pelahatchie and Haley Harrell of Falkner; three great-grandchildren, Alazia, Kingzton and Haze Goolsby; five sisters, Doris Farrow of Ripley, Joyce Barnett (Foxy) of Olive Branch, Linda Akins of Southaven, Carol Jackson (Neil) of Ripley and Sandra Robinson (Anthony) of Southaven; and one brother, Robert Goolsby (Sharon) of Ripley.
Pallbearers will be Scott Harrell, Gerald Hill, Nicky Newby, Pat Hopper, Chase Goolsby, Matt Keith and Clint Goolsby. Honorary pallbearers will be Tate Willingham, Lonnie Goolsby, Tom Bridges, Jesse Jones, Terry Akins, Deb Baker, David Walker and his fellow co-workers.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2013, at Ripley Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jody Hill officiating. Burial will be in Falkner Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. today, Nov. 5, 2013, at Ripley Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bonita Harrell and Eudora Tapp; three brothers, Treadwell, Randle and an infant brother, Leroy; three nephews, Kenneth Goolsby, Russell Robinson and Ed Jackson; and one niece, Judy Jackson Wilbanks.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and Cancer Society.
