Elizabeth Cross Smith

Elizabeth Cross Smith, age 98, died Monday, March 24, 2014. Mrs. Smith was a native of Davidson County and was the daughter of the late Howard and Grace Baker Cross Allen. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Everett Smith III who died in 1996, a son Howard C. Smith who died in 2003 and a brother John Edwin Allen died 1975.

Graveside service is to be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery. Reverend Michael O'Bannon will officiate. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Wednesday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel.

Mrs. Smith is survived by a son, Thomas E. Smith and his wife Judy of Murfreesboro; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Blair Smith of Murfreesboro; and a brother Billy Baker Allen of Chattanooga; seven grandchildren, Rhett Smith, Elizabeth Wilkins, Scott Smith, Shannon Bouldin, Jerry Smith, Greg Smith, and LeAnn Smith-Hunter; thirteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

In 1946 she and her family moved from Nashville to the Smith Family Homeplace in Blackman Community in Rutherford County. She and her husband were among the founding members of the Blackman Community Club, and until her health no longer permitted it she made and served ice cream at the annual Blackman Barbeque. She continued to be active in the Demonstration Club until moving to Adams Place Assisted Living in 2004. Mrs. Smith was a volunteer for American Red Cross for 30 years scheduling workers for the blood mobile. A devoted member of First United Methodist Church, she attended the Anne Huggins Sunday School class.

After graduating from Hume Fogg High School Mrs. Smith worked at Cain Sloan Department store until the birth of her son. Thenceforth she was a devoted mother to her sons and later to her grandchildren and their children. Known affectionately as "Ma-Ma" her sweet nature and her shining personality made her a blessing in the lives of all those who knew her.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Adams Place for the loving care they rendered in her final years.
