John Norman Barnett, Jr.

John Norman Barnett, Jr., age 83, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013.

A native of Smyrna, TN, he was preceded in death by his parents, John N. Barnett, Sr. and Jessie Seaton Barnett; and his two brothers, William "Bill" Barnett and Frank Barnett.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Parkway Baptist Church. Brother Dan Parker and Rev. John Upchurch will officiate. Burial will follow in Mapleview Cemetery.

Mr. Barnett is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Jean Allen Barnett; daughter, Betty Barnett Howell of Decatur, AL; son, John Barnett III and his wife Pam of Smyrna, TN; son, Stephen Barnett and his wife Teresa of Smyrna, TN and daughter, Jayne Tosh Bumps and her husband Bill of Newnan, GA; grandchildren, Paul Howell and his wife Jamie of Decatur, AL, Brent Howell and his wife Carrie of Ringgold, GA, Chris Barnett of Smyrna, TN, Melanie Barnett of Nashville, TN, Sam Short and his wife Brooklyn of Murfreesboro, TN, Craig Short and his wife Rachel of Smyrna, TN, John Young II and his wife Nevada of Murfreesboro, TN, Jennifer Ly and her husband John of TX and Jeanette Young of PA; 12 great-grandchildren and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mr. Barnett was a 1948 graduate of Castle Heights Military Academy where he served as band commander. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. Barnett was a long-time member of Smyrna First Baptist Church and a current member of Parkway Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was an entrepreneur in Smyrna and most remembered for owning Barnett Furniture. Mr. Barnett was a Gideon, a Charter Smyrna Lions Club Member, Charter Smyrna Rotary Member, was Vice President of the Toastmasters, and enjoyed square dancing with his wife for many years.

Chris Barnett, Paul Howell, Brent Howell, Sam Short, Craig Short, John Young II, Eddie Barnett, Richard Barnett, Lee Barnett, Marvin Barnett, and Mike Allen will serve as Active Pallbearers. All ordained deacons, The Graubners and The Sheffield Sunday School Classes of Parkway Baptist Church, Dick Johnson, James Earl Barnett, Marc Lewis, Claude Cooper, Ray Goad, Dan Whittle, Harold Galyon, Howard Smithson, Calvin Underwood, and Doug Burch will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Memorials can be made to the Parkway Baptist Church Building Fund.
