William Clayton "Bill" Phillips Sr.

William Phillips Obituary

William Clayton Phillips, Sr.

William C. Phillips, Sr., "Bill" to those that knew him, was born in Rutherford County, TN to the late Evan Phillips and Alice Sanders Phillips. William was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Murfreesboro.

He leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, William (Tracey) C. Phillips, Jr. of Marietta, GA and Kevin (Dionne) Jeffrey Phillips of Fort Worth, TX; two sisters, Coreen Phillips and Louise Lawrence, both of Murfreesboro, TN; a sister-in-law, Louise Phillips of Murfreesboro, TN. He also leaves one aunt, Catherine Ellis of Murfreesboro, TN, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He leaves also a niece, Evelyn Phillips, more like a sister, as well as a great niece, Yolanda Smith, more like a daughter. He spent many hours with his devoted nephews, Tommy, Wilbert and Gilbert Butler.

William was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and James Phillips, and one sister, Susie Frances.

Bill served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was discharged honorably. He graduated from Tennessee State University after receiving a degree in Agricultural Engineering. He worked for the Department of Agriculture in Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland Counties, MI.

Growing restless after retirement, he became a volunteer to the American Red Cross, Veterans Affairs, Habitat for Humanity, VITA programs for low income tax preparation, helping assist senior citizens, and Christmas in July. Bill also enjoyed painting and doing minor repairs on homes for senior citizens. His excessively busy schedule culminated in him receiving the award, "Saginawian of the Year. "

Bill had a love for gardening and grew more than thirty-five different vegetables. His ingenuity in gardening was recognized in The Daily Journal (Murfreesboro) for the creation of a rainwater based irrigation system that yielded very large harvests.
