Robert Lee Underwood, Sr.
Robert Lee Underwood, Sr., age 79 of Murfreesboro, TN, passed away Friday March 14, 2014 at his home after an extended illness and surgeries.
He was born and lived in Murfreesboro all his life. Mr. Underwood and his wife wintered in Sebring, FL the past 15 years.
He was a former member of Kingwood Heights Church of Christ for many years, and was presently a member of North Boulevard Church of Christ and the Old Mens Sunday School Class. Mr. Underwood was self-employed most of his adult life and was a 1952 graduate of Kittrell High School. He was co-owner of Rutherford Auto Parts, Smyrna Auto Supply with his brother Morris, and good friend Charles Fulghum, City Auto Parts, McMinnville, TN and co-owner of Lad and Dad in Smyrna, TN, a licensed home builder, and served in the 30th armored division of the Tennessee National Guard. Mr. Underwood was a supporter of the Good Shepherd Children's Home and Middle Tennessee Christian School. He was a founding Board Member of Citizen Central Bank.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse L. and Mary Dean Daniels Underwood, Sr.; infant son, Randal Lester Underwood; brothers, Jesse Jr. and Morris Underwood.
Mr. Underwood is survived by his wife of 58 years, Helen McKnight Underwood; sons, Robert Lee Underwood, Jr. and his wife Shawn of Greer, SC, Andrew and Richard Underwood, both of Murfreesboro, TN; sister, Helen Neville of Chattanooga, TN; brother, Jerry Underwood of Murfreesboro, TN; granddaughters, Hannah, Phoebe and Emma Underwood, all of Greer, SC; nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Woodfin Memorial Chapel, with Jim Bryant, Joe Mayes and Marvin Maulpin officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, with the Old Mens Sunday Class, Sam Allen, Jim Baker, Bill Boner, Jim Bryant, Walter Jenkins, Bill Jennings, Richard Leddy, Brady Mann, Marvin Maulpin, Richard Reeves, David Underhill, and Jim Williams serving as Active Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be George Williams, Dr. David Johnson, Dr. Antonio Granda, Dr. Juris Shibayama, Dr. Tina Gresham, Dr. Jimmy Carter, Tim Haddock, Don Harrison, Glenn Chrisman, Clark Gannon, Carl Adkins, Charles Lee Williamson, Jim Markum, and Charles Swift.
