2014 - 2014 Obituary Condolences Flowers
Barbara Raye Lambert Onks

Barbara Raye Lambert Onks passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, at her home in Smyrna, TN on June 6, 2014 after a brief illness.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a joy to her friends and all who knew her.

She was born in Greenback, TN on December 23, 1925, to Samuel George and Laura (Thompson) Lambert, and raised on the family dairy farm with four brother, Homer, Guy, Mack, and Sam, Jr.; and four sisters; Maude Walker Clendenen, Hazel Lambert, Helen Sneed, and Lena Mae Beaver, all who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Edgar.

On December 1, 1943, as a freshman at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Barbara Raye climbed out of her dorm-room window with the help of her sister, Lena Mae, and cousin, Martha Belle, and eloped with her high school sweetheart, Ernest C. Onks, who was on leave from service in the U.S. Navy during WWII. They were married 60 years. He preceded her in death in 2003.

Barbara Raye devoted her life to raising her family and placing their priorities above her own. In later years, she joined the workforce and worked alongside her husband Ernie in the cattle industry, as well as his law firm, Onks & Associates, in Cookeville, TN, which they operated for over 20 years.

She is survived by sons, Ernie Onks, Jr. (Linda), Dennis Onks (June), Jerry Onks (Debbie), and Lauren Wyatt Onks; grandsons, Jason Onks (Beth) and Cayce Onks (Jacky); granddaughters, Elizabeth Onks and Katie Onks Harris (Chris); great-granddaughters, Hannah, Jill, Sophia, Julia Onks, and Chloe Dalton Purser; brothers-in-law, Hugh Hamil and Cloyd Onks (Bonnie); and a host of nieces and nephews.

Barbara Raye has been a member of the United Methodist Church for many years and was a volunteer at Memorial Hospital in Madison.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The or Hospice.
