Stephen Michael Stapleton, age 78, of Dodge City Kansas and Leadville Colorado, died at 2:55am Thursday morning, August 29th, 2013 at the Kansas Medical Center in Andover, Kansas. Born September 13th, 1934 in Hutchinson, Kansas, he was the son of the late Othor Stapleton and Lula Stapleton.
While attending Hutchinson High School, Steve was active in track and football. He attended Hutchinson Junior College in 1951-52 and The University of Colorado Boulder in 1952-53. Steve served as Sergeant in the Marine Corps from 1953-1957 and always celebrated the Marine Corps birthday every year. His Marine Corps flag continues to wave on the front deck of his cabin, where he spent much of his later years surrounded by family, good friends and amazing views of the Rocky Mountains.
Steve was a claims adjuster for Farm Bureau Insurance in Dodge City, Kansas, before retiring and spending most of his time at his cabin outside Leadville, Colorado. In his spare time, he became interested in scenic photography. He also enjoyed fishing, hiking, shooting and spending time with his friends, but he most loved spending quality time with his four grandchildren. He always called them his 'pride and joy'.
Steve was survived by his children; son Michael S. Stapleton and his wife Wendy Stapleton of Grass Lake, Michigan, daughter Julieanne Stapleton Eckles of Lenexa Kansas; four grandchildren, Jack Stapleton, Ashley Stapleton, Alexandra Eckles and Dane Eckles; and his older brother Billy Stapleton and wife Olimpia Stapleton of Denver, Colorado; and many other loving nieces, nephews and relatives.
