JB was my mentor through St Andrews and Life Boys in Invercargill when I moved to YMCA he was there too. He instilled in me the qualities of compassion and to be a better person. Maybe I may have ended up before the courts if he hadn't steered me in the right direction. I've so regretted not keeping in touch over the years, and now sadly it is too late. Sincere condolences to Val and JBs family.

JB's commitment to a better, more equitable society for people with intellectual disabilities inspired so many of us - disabled people, families, professionals. Our country is a better, more caring place because of him. Warm thoughts to JB's family.

JB you were an inspiration for so many of us.
People with an intellectual disability knew and trusted you as you knew and trusted them.
It was your vision that each person should have a voice in the decisions that affected them and you helped us build the self advocacy movement first in New Zealand then in the wider world.
It was your vision and skill that built IHC into the organisation it is today and we are thankful for that.
You contributed so much in other fields which others will speak about.
Go in peace JB knowing we who worked closely with you will never forget you.
To Val and the rest of your family my condolences for the loss of JB However you must be proud of the man that loved and cared for his family but at the same time gave so much to others.

JB was a good friend and an inspiration to our family in his IHC and Abbeyfield roles. Mostly we remember his passion for the disadvantaged - older lonely folk (Abbeyfield), intellectually disabled (IHC) and homeless (shelterbox). Determined, enthusiastic, a generous and entertaining guest and with endless energy, his like will not pass our way again. Our condolences, love and blessings to Val and his family.

I only meet my uncle several times. But my memories are all of a man with presence and leadership. But also someone who was happy to spend some time with those who were just there, being interested in them, chatting the chat. I am forever grateful that he and his family are part of our extended family. My warm wishes, rest in peace JB.

Way back in the '50s JB was a leader at Life Boys and Boys Brigade, St Andrews, Invercargill. He was a great guy and we were all very sad when other committments forced him to give that up. Sad too, now. A very good man.
