George, who I first met at Scott Base, was one of my gurus when I joined the Geological Survey in 1967. He, together with Gerald Lensen and Pat Suggate, helped launch my career in earth deformation - both tectonic and volcanic - and opened my eyes to the forces that created this country. Even more importantly, to understand that the geology is still being created and rearranged under our feet and that, in effect as tenants on this planet, we must all learn to live with it, and prepare for the consequences. Specifically, he inspired and helped me set up various schemes to monitor and research volcanic phenomena both in NZ and on Mt Erebus, Antarctica. In short, he taught me to see and understand the geological world in a much more enlightened way. Thank you George!

As a young new geologist arriving at the NZ Geological Survey in 1974 I shared an office for a little while with George. On the office walls were plate tectonic reconstructions of New Zealand, very avant garde for the time. I wasn't closely involved with his work afterwards, but retained a huge respect for his knowledge of NZ geology and his enduring memory for detail. My sympathy and respects to his family.
