Rita Compton

Compton, Rita Mary

Rita Mary Compton, 92, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 17, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society Scandia Village skilled care center, Sister Bay, WI.

She was born Nov. 18, 1920, in Appleton, WI, to George and Lucy (Esdepsky) Laux. She grew up in Menasha, WI, the eldest of seven children. On Sept. 20,

1943, she married Charles Compton, the southern Illinois sailor she met at a USO dance in Milwaukee. They resided in Mt. Vernon, Ill., her husband's hometown. She worked as a bookkeeper, retiring from General Motors Acceptance Corp.

Charles (Chuck) died in 1980, and in 1984, Rita moved to Milwaukee to be near her family. In 2003, Rita relocated to the Meadows in Scandia Village, following the move her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Frank Dale Murphy, made a few years earlier to Ellison Bay.

Rita was an accomplished embroiderer, both needlepoint and cross-stitch.

She was a member of Stella Maris Catholic Parish, Sister Bay site and St. Rosalia Altar Sodality. Her favorite activity with the sodality was taking tickets at the annual Strawberry Festival. Until the last few years of her life, she looked forward to weekly bridge games with friends at the Meadows. One of her greatest joys was being able to spend time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.

In addition to Mary Beth, now of Egg Harbor, survivors include two grandchildren, Shannon (Joseph) Haberli, Egg Harbor, and Sean (Crystal) Murphy, Columbus, GA; three great-grandchildren, Shayna and Joey Haberli, Egg Harbor, and Jackson Angel White, Columbus; brother, Ronald Laux, Milwaukee; two sisters, Ruth (Clyde) Bolyard, Milwaukee, and Patricia (Paul) LaBadie, South Bend, IN; and sister-in-law, Doris

(Donald) Laux, Neenah, WI. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Eugene, Gerald and Donald Laux; sister-in-law, Muriel (Gerald) Laux; great-grandson, Drew Murphy; and son-in-law, Dale Murphy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 22, 2013, at Stella Maris Catholic Church in Sister Bay. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking memorial donations be given to Good Samaritan Society Scandia Village Building Fund, 10560 Applewood Rd., Sister Bay, WI 54234-9051.

Condolences may be offered at www.caspersonfuneralhome.com.

While at Scandia's skilled care center these past 3 1/2 years, Rita has been surrounded by angels, cared for and loved by all the staff in nursing, chaplaincy, administration, maintenance, dining service, and not least, the beauticians who made her proud of the way she looked. All were truly treasured gifts to Rita during the last years of her life.
