Erick Matthew Kettering, 23, formerly of Sturgeon Bay, died on April 9, 2014, from injuries suffered in a car accident in Kentucky. He was born on June 7, 1990, in Green Bay to Jack and Janelle Kettering.
Erick graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 2009. He was involved with wrestling and football teams. After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Army, following his brother and sister into the Armed Services. Erick served from 2009-2013 and served a tour in Afghanistan. He was part of the U.S. Infantry- 1st Infantry Division - The Big Red One and he received several awards. After Afghanistan, he was stationed at Fort Know, KY and was discharged from there. He was in the process of continuing his education in Louisville at the time of the accident.
He is survived by his parents, Jack and Janelle, of Sturgeon Bay,WI; 3 brothers: SPC Joel Kettering (wife, Ashley and son, Caleb) of Ft. Carson, CO; Bjorn Kettering and Hans Kettering, both of Sturgeon Bay; his sister, Linnea Kettering, of Sturgeon Bay; maternal grandmother, Elia Sanger, of San Jose, CA; special grandmother, "Mormor" Doris Oberg, Moline, IL; aunts, uncles and cousins in Illinois and California; also his many friends in Louisville, KY and his special friend, Susan. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jack and Virginia Kettering and maternal grandfather, Francis "Skip" Sanger, and an infant sister, Kirsten.
A funeral with military services will be conducted at 11:00 am Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the Forbes Funeral Home in Sturgeon Bay (www.forbesfuneralhome.com). Friends may call on Tuesday at the funeral home from 5-7:00 pm and on Wednesday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Erick's family extends a special thank you to the wonderful staff at University of Louisville Hospital on 8W for all the support and care of Erick and to all of those who offered support from our community of Sturgeon Bay.
