Witalison, Arthur George

Arthur George Witalison, 86, died April 5, 2013 after succumbing to complications from a stroke. Art was born February 7, 1927 in Juddville, Wisconsin on the Witalison homestead.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years June (Bastian) who he married in June 1948. He is also survived by his children, John (Linda), Paul (Kari), Sara (John) Skamser; three grandchildren, Skyler (Julie), Erik (Amanda), Erin; and a sister, Patricia (Jerome) Koessl. He is preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Anna (Czarnik) Witalison, his son James, and a brother Robert.

He attended Central State Teachers College, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and the University of Illinois. Arthur served as a teacher and principal at Portage and DeForest, Wisconsin.

He was a former U.S. Army infantry officer who retired with the rank of Major. Art was a "mustang" who was commissioned from the ranks. He was a member of the 32nd Division Veteran's Association and the Retired Officers Association. He was extremely proud to have worn the uniform in service to his country.

In later years he, along with June, operated Witalison's Market in Egg Harbor before retiring to the beloved farm which has been in the family for 115 years. At their farm, he was able to indulge his love for vegetable gardening and giving away the considerable excess production at a roadside stand. He also enjoyed planting trees as evidenced by the thousands of trees growing on the home property. Deer hunting at his Polk County property with his sons and grandsons was a source of great satisfaction to him.

Arthur was known for his deep devotion to his family and especially to his wife as she struggles through a lengthy illness.

The Witalison family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the caregivers group for their support and to Hearthside and Unity Hospice for their compassion in Arthur's final days.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Arthur G. Witalison is pending for a time in early Summer. In lieu of flowers a Memorial Fund is being established and will be announced before the Memorial Service.
