Walter Cordell Obituary

Mr. Walter Mixon Cordell of Ozark died Tuesday morning, Oct. 14, 2008, at Oakview Manor. He was 98.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, 2008, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Enterprise, with the Rev. Gillis Crenshaw officiating and Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be held at Fuqua-Bankston Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Walter Mixon Cordell was born on March 2, 1910, in Coffee County, the son of John Henry and Emma Alice Harding Cordell. Walter had very limited formal education, having been given the job of plowing a mule to help in raising the family since his mother died when he was 8. He was of the Methodist faith. He had a great love of the land and tended his garden until the age of 96. Even though his formal education was limited, he was often called upon to cruise timber for individuals and would tell them how many board feet of lumber their timber should yield. Mr. Cordell was engaged in farming during his younger years, then entered the logging and sawmill business. After leaving the logging business, he retired from Cowikee Cotton Mill, Ozark.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 64 years, Estelle Downs Cordell; five sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include three children, Herbert (Connie) Cordell of Eight Mile, Bobby (Nina) Cordell of Ozark, Martha (Ronnie) Williams of Midland City; four grandchildren, Dewayne (Windy) Cordell, Mark Cordell, Ronnie Michael (Nikki) Williams, Kim (Jeff) Byrd; one great-grandchild, Haiden Cordell; several nieces and nephews.
