Jack Decker passed from this life in Tishomingo, Oklahoma on Monday, August 11, 2014 at the age of 88 years 7 month and 22 days. He was born in Pirtle, Oklahoma in Bryan County to Charley Petty and Laura (Ferguson) Decker. Doris Elene Garner married Jack in San Marcos, Texas on June 4, 1949.
Jack graduated from Cobb High School, then he joined the Navy but soon received a medical discharge due to a high school basketball injury. He went to California to work in the ship yards and saved enough money to begin an agriculture degree at Oklahoma State University. After a year of college, he joined the Army Air Corp to see the world. He was stationed in Alaska and then stationed in San Marcos, Texas where he met and married his wife of 65 years, Elene.
When he was discharged from the army, Jack and Elene went back to Stillwater to complete his degree. After second year at OSU, he decided to take a break from school to buy a farm in Nida, promising Elene that they would soon return to Stillwater to finish his degree. Although he continued to take classes, his love of the land kept him from ever leaving the farm and they lived in Nida on the first acreage that they bought.Jack had a passion for history and spent much of his time researching the history of Johnston County and Oklahoma.
Jack is survived by wife, Elene of the home; children, Kenneth Decker and wife Sandy of Nida, Oklahoma, Ginny McCarthick and husband Scotty of Tishomingo, Oklahoma, Teresa Weathers and husband Ed of Nida, Oklahoma and Clinton Decker and wife Andrea of Stigler, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Josh and Nicole McCarthrick, Drew and Jana McCarthick, Brooke and Ronnie Walters, Leah and Michael Harper, Jacob Flint, Tyler, Clay, Cooper and Landrie Decker, Tyler Edge and Ireland Fitzer; great-grandchildren, Natalie Harper, Christian and Emerson Walters, Logan and Jax McCarthick; sister, Retha Jean Decker Curtis of Muskogee, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Laura Decker; brothers, Paul "Booke" Decker and Charles "Snook" Decker.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 7-8:00 PM Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at the Holmes Coffey Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma. A Funeral Service in his honor will be at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the Nida Baptist Church with Rev. David Boggs officiating.
Pallbearers will be Josh McCarthick, Drew McCarthick, Jacob Flint, Tyler Decker, Clayton Decker and Cooper Decker. The Honorary Pallbearers will be George "Monk" Hendricks and Jeff Brown. Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Nida, Oklahoma with Masonic Lodge #91 honoring with Graveside Rites.
