Odus Jones

Odus Ray Jones was born on June 2, 1935 in the Pearson School Community Southeast of Colbert, Oklahoma to Paul D. and Rosa Lee (Guess) Jones and passed away on January 30, 2014 at his home in Calera at the age of 78.

At a very early age, his family moved to Kiowa County, Oklahoma whey they lived in Hobart and near Cooperton where Odus began his schooling. In 1944 the family bought a farm near Wapanucka and he worked on the farm and until he graduated from Wapanucka High School in May of 1953. In September he entered the United States Navy. He served aboard five destroyers, a landing ship tank and as a member of the Admirals staff aboard five aircraft carriers. He served on shore duty at Great Lakes, Illinois, Dallas, Texas, Midway Island and Lafayette, Indiana. He started and ended his career at San Diego, California attaining the rank of Personnelman First Class. While serving in the Navy he married Betty Ann (Driver) on August 29, 1959 in Dallas. They were blessed with 49 years of marriage until her death in September 2008. After his Military career, he worked as a clerk and letter carrier for Escondido, California Post Office and he attended Palomar Community College. In 1977, Odus and his family moved to Calera. He continued his education at Southeastern and received his Associates Degree. In 1978, Odus was hired at the Calera Public Schools assigned to the custodial and maintenance duties. He retired in October 1994 and worked part time cleaning the bank in the evenings. He also delivered meals to the homebound for the Calera Nutritional center. A special friend of Odus is Melvin "Pete" Perkins of Burleson, Texas whom he considers another brother.
Odus was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and sisters Frances, Linnie and Alice.
Odus is survived by his daughters Jinx McCarley of Calera and Nancy O'Brien and husband Tommy of Euless, TX; sister Dovie Adams fo Milton, VT; brother Dillon Jones of Calera; grandchildren Lindee Davis and husband Cody, Dusty Metcalf of Calera, Brittni Wright and husband Harlan and Alli Townsend and husband Cody; great grandchildren Nikki and Dakoda Metcalf, Kinzee Coker, Ty and Seth Davis, Avy, Zayden, Riley and Roman Wright, Corbin and Jordyn Townsend and Ajay and Kadie Metcalf; brother in law James Driver; 2 grand dogs and numerous other family and friends.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Brown's Funeral Service Chapel. Bro. Don Hyde Jr. will officiate. The family will received friends at 12:30 P.M. in the Brown's Community Room prior to the service. Online condolences may be sent to the family at
