Billy Taylor

Billy Joe Taylor passed peacefully at his home in Austin, Texas on May 3, 2014. He was 74 years old. Billy Joe was born on October 22, 1939 in Cobb, Oklahoma to Joseph Preston Taylor and Eunice Thornton Taylor, he was the youngest of 11 children. Billy Joe was a graduate from Durant High School (1958) where he was Class President and Co-Captain of the Football team.

He then graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 1962. He was the first to graduate college in his family and shortly after bought his parents their first home with running water & electricity. Billy Joe was a Captain in the US Army Reserve during the 1960s.

After college, Billy Joe moved to Dallas, Texas where he worked & married Linda Lou Legg in 1969. In 1977, he moved to Northwest Hills in Austin, Texas with his wife and their two daughters, Shannon and Jenny and then moved back to Dallas in 1990. Billy Joe was a successful and well-respected salesman for Broyhill Furniture for 38 years. He received Salesman of the Year in 1981, 1990 and 1997. In 2010, Billy Joe retired from Broyhill and moved back to Austin to be with his daughters & grandchildren.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his daughters: Shannon Jo Mathena, her husband, Drew, and their son, Brady and twin daughters Linda & Lacey; Jennifer Taylor Schlueter, her husband, Stephen, and their two sons, Trey and Casey; sister: Frances Sealey; nephew Don Taylor and niece Paula Criss.

A memorial church service was held in Austin, Texas on Friday, May 16, 4:00 pm at St. Matthews Episcopal Church (www.stmattsaustin.org) and a Memorial Celebration will follow in Durant, Oklahoma on June 14th at the Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texhoma. Arrangements are being handled by Austin-Peel & Son Funeral Home.
