Virginia Dare Slaten a resident of Calera, Oklahoma passed from this life into the arms of her savior on Monday, April 21, 2014 at the age of 93 years 8 months and 1 day. She was born in Oklahoma to Earl and Lillie (Blankenship) Glenn on August 1, 1920. Virginia married Carter Earl "Red" Slaten in Durant, Oklahoma on September 3, 1938.
Virginia was a member of the Calera Baptist Church. She gave much of her time to helping others by working at the Clothes Closet at her church. She could not stand critters up near her home so she spent a lot of time killing snakes, skunks, armadillos and ants. Virginia loved to sew for her family and tend to her garden blessing everyone with what she produced from it. When she was a young girl she played basketball whenever she could and enjoyed playing the guitar. But the most precious thing to Virginia was her family and they time they spent together, she was the type of person who gave of herself to everyone.
Mrs. Slaten is survived by her son, Dwayne Slaten and wife Lucy of Lake Bridge Port, Texas; daughter, Doris Atwood and husband Darwin of Benbrook, Texas; son, Ronnie Slaten and wife Terry of Calera, Oklahoma; brother, Bill Glenn and wife Dorothy of Calera, Oklahoma; sister, Lura Peoples of Silo, Oklahoma; sister-in-law, Margie Glenn of Calera, Oklahoma; her beloved grandsons, Brad Slaten and wife, Mary of Hurst, Texas, Carter Slaten and wife Jodi of Alvord, Texas, Kelly Slaten and wife Kylie of Sunset, Texas, Kevin Atwood and wife Wendy of St. Louis, Missouri, Brandon Atwood and wife Ayde of Benbrook, Texas, Ron Duffell and wife Mindee of Shawnee, Oklahoma, Micah Slaten of Calera, Oklahoma and Matthew Slaten of Calera, Oklahoma; 15 precious great-grandchildren and 1 precious great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Slaten was preceded in death by her husband, Carter Earl (Red) Slaten; parents, Earl and Lillie Glenn; brothers, Robert and Wilburn Glenn; sister, Eva Lee Hider.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6-7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Holmes Coffey Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Oklahoma A Funeral Service in honor of her memory will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at the Calera First Baptist Church in Calera, Oklahoma with Bro. Jacob Towes officiating Internment will follow at the Rosehill Cemetery in Calera. The pallbearers will be Virginia's grandsons.
