Roy L. Harmon, a cherished father and resident of Durant, Okla., passed from this life on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at the age of 96 years, 4 months and 21 days. He was born to Elysses M. and Bertha F. (Corbin) Harmon in Durant, Okla., on Sunday, January 13, 1918. Roy met then married the love of his life Clara Brooks on Monday, Dec. 1, 1947, in Durant, Okla.

Roy was a member of the Northwest Church of Christ. After retiring as the proprietor of the South Fifth Grocery, he loved spending time with his dear wife Clara, especially working in the garden with her. He enjoyed fishing whenever he got the chance, both with friends and family. Roy was a handyman who loved to build things. He served his community and country as a photographer and Master Sergeant during WWII and was a hero to his family until the end.

Mr. Harmon is survived by his sons, Billy Harmon of Durant, Oklahoma and Jim Harmon of Albuquerque, New Mexico; sister, Marie Horn of Farmington, New Mexico.

Mr. Harmon was preceded in death by his wife, Clara B. Harmon; brothers, Clovis and Herbert Harmon; sisters, Olene Meade and Hazel Inez Palmer.

A gathering of family and friends will be 6-7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, 2014, at the Holmes-Coffey-Murray Funeral Home in Durant, Okla. A service in celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Northwest Church of Christ with Bro. Ernest Sturch and Bro. Don Gelles officiating. Pallbearers will be John Carrel, Paul Mauck, Neal Taylor, Calvin Gordon, Benny Knox and Brent Knox. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
