As an old Giant fan, Matty will always have a special place in my heart. The Alou family represented baseball with dignity and class. I know he would have scored in '62, his heart would have gotten him home. Now he is truely home. John j. McMahon , Schenectady, N.Y.

As a kid growing up I was a Giants fan. Primarily because of Willie Mays. The Alou family was a great baseball story and all were integral part of the SF success in those years. Blessings to the entire Alou family as you mourn the passing of a great player, an even better man.

The three Alou brothers lived two blocks away from us in the Excelsior District when they played with the Giants in the early 60's and we would pass their home on the way to school. We always got a thrill and a smile and a wave when one of the brothers happened to be outside. Wonderful memories of a grand era in Giants history.

I remember collecting baseball cards with the Alou brothers, Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda, and other San Francisco Giant greats during the early 1960s. It was an incredible era for baseball and the Alous were at the forefront. In losing Matty, we've lost one of the best.

Thanks for the memories, Matty....to be part of an all-family outfield and not have it duplicated is special indeed. You are a classy guy, and have been the subject of many fun chats between my dad and me as he indoctrinated me into the wonderful world of baseball. Takes us back to a special time....rest in peace, dear Matty.

To the Alou Family: Baseball has lost one of its finest players. You have my deepest heartfelt sympathies. The only ball I ever caught at Forbes Field, Matty was practicing his bunting (PEPPER) in the bullpen before an Atlanta Braves game. He fouled one off and I caught it. That made my whole year. Another time Matty and his brother Felipe were leaving Forbes Field, both of them had watermelons on their shoulders, laughing and having a good time. They got into an old Rambler with no muffler. Boy that car was LOUD. They waved at us and were on their merry way. One time I asked Matty, " Hey what side of the bat do you hit the ball with?" He loved to choke up on the bat. I sure loved watching him play. I will keep him and the rest of the Alou family in my thoughts and prayers GOD BLESS YOU MATEO. Rest in Peace

Another Giants Giant passes on. My condolence to the Alou family. My brothers would play cork baseball in our back yard and certain things would be single, double, triple and home run. I would be the Giants since Willie Mays was my idol and I would go thru the lineup and switch hit when I had to and my older brother was the Dodgers and younger brother was the Braves. It was a pleasure to be born around that time to enjoy the players that played for the game and not the money. Please rest in peace.

At this difficult time, I would like to offer my deepest sympathy in the loss of your loved one. Coming up as a kid I remember the all Alou outfield and Matty simply as a great player. In the near future when Jesus Christ resurrects the dead I hope that I will have the privilege of meeting Mr. Alou personally.
Sincerely,

Herb Cain once said that he had seen a bumper sticker that said, "Honk once if you love Jesus, twice if you love Mateo, and three time if you love Felipe."
Matty was on the first Tacoma Giant team after the Giant's Triple A team had moved from Phoenix. Even then, he had a sweet swing and an even sweeter disposition. He once risked a fine by giving my sister an autograph during a game. He quietly gave her the autograph but warned her he had to be careful.
I also remember Willie Mays complaining that Mateo had not gone from 1st to home on Mays' double in the nineth to tie the score in that fateful seventh game in the 1962 World Series. Mateo never replied but he was too much of a team player to run through the third base coach's stop sign.
So today, honk twice if you loved Mateo, the sweet man with the sweet bat.

I grew up in the small Western MD. town of Cumberland and was a big fan of the Pittsburg Pirates who played at Forbes Field. I remember announcer Bob Prince exclaiming "All we need is a Bloop and a Blast" to win the game. Many times Manny came through. Thanks for all of the memories and may you rest in eternal peace. Go Buc's!!
