Raymond Adler Obituary

Raymond Nicholas Adler
Mar. 29, 1946 - Mar. 24, 2018
Resident of Concord
Raymond Nicholas Adler was born on March 29, 1946, in Evansville, Indiana, to Merrie Claire Northrup and Dr. Raymond Adler. Affectionately referred to as 'Nick', Raymond attended Reitz Memorial High School and worked for his grandfather's grocery store as a customer service clerk. Two influential men in Nick's life were his uncle, Lyle Northrup, a Free Methodist minister and his cousin, Paul Waldschmidt, a Holy Cross Bishop. After Nick graduated high school, he entered St. Meinrad Seminary but after much reflection, he chose a different path, earning a history degree from the University of Evansville.
Nick worked as a school teacher for a couple years, but eventually pursued a career in the medical field by enrolling at the University of Portland, where he graduated with a Nursing Science degree. During this period, he met the love of his life, Marie 'Cookie' Garaventa and on July 27, 1974, Nick and Cookie were married. As their family grew, Nick worked as a visiting nurse for Contra Costa County and then began a 35-year career working as an office manager for Concord Disposal Service. During his tenure, Nick provided exceptional customer service and volunteered with many community organizations. He continued his passion and pursuit for higher education, by earning a master's degree in national security and he enjoyed listening to many audiobooks, until his unexpected passing on March 24, 2018.
Nick is survived by his loving wife, Cookie; devoted children: Paul Adler (Lisa), David Adler (Nicole), Nicole Impagliazzo (Maron) & Angelina Kosich (Greg). Nick's greatest passion in life was entertaining his beloved eleven grandchildren: Nicholas, Alessandra, Joseph, Mark, Michael, Siena, Andrew, Christopher, Arianna, Luke & Carly. He is also survived by his brothers: Steven Adler, Michael Adler (Jen) & John Adler (Diana); sisters: Merrie Stradtner & Jennie Evans (Don) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
His generous loving spirit, strong sense of faith, funny sense of humor and quick wit will be missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to the "Nick Adler Memorial Fund" at the John Muir Health Foundation. This fund will support two causes near to Nick's heart, children's health and assisting patients suffering from Myasthenia Gravis.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Thursday, April 5th, 2018 from 9:30-10:45 a.m. followed by an 11:00 a.m. funeral service at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 3966 Chestnut Avenue, Concord, California.

My sincere condolences to Nick's family and brothers and sisters with whom I had many wonderful memories and laughter. I grew up next door to the Adler's on Lincoln Ave when the 50's were a special time to be a kid. Nickie added to that special time. He was a great pal.

My condolences to the family. I was a few years older than Nick but do remember him. He was the same age as my sister, Barbara. Linda Adler Schmitt

I never had the pleasure of meeting Ray Nick, but I knew his father and grandfather. I'm from Evansville, and lived just two blocks from Adam Adler's grocery, where we traded. Doctor Ray Adler was the doctor for the Poor Clares in Evansville, donating his services, and I was a member of that community before transferring to New Orleans. He was much appreciated by the Sisters, and he frequently told stories about his children. If you would like to hear a couple of them, and a story or two about Adam, write to me at [email protected]. Be assured of my prayers for Ray Nick. When I saw the "Ray Adler" name, I looked up the rest of the account to see if it really was Doctor Ray's son.

So sorry to hear about Nick's passing. The Adlers lived around the corner from my grandparents and I remember walking to the Adlers - with my grandmother, Sissie - for many visits. Such a great family. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
