Roger Evans Obituary

Roger Jackson Evans, Jr.
October 31, 1930 - June 1, 2017
Former Resident of Danville
Roger Evans, a long-time resident of Danville, CA and Friendship, ME, was born in Princeton, NJ. He grew up in Trenton, NJ, and attended Trenton public schools, the Lawrenceville School (cum laude, class of 1948), Yale University (BE, class of 1952), and Cornell University (MBA with distinction, 1956). Roger served as 1st Lieutenant in the US Army artillery during the Korean Conflict. Roger's profession was manufacturing management, as a private consultant and earlier, in positions at Memorex, Hexcel, McKinsey & Co., and TRW. Roger married Sue Altmiller Dornblaser of Hazleton, PA in 1955; they started their family in Cleveland, OH, then moved to Santa Ana, CA in 1958 and to Danville, CA in 1967. Roger spent portions of most of his summers as a youth and adult at his family cottage on the Maine coast, originally purchased by his grandfather. Roger was a lifelong choral singer, in the Lawrenceville choir and Glee Club, as President of the Apollo Glee Club at Yale, in the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus, the Community Presbyterian Church Choir, the Yale Alumni Chorus (2001 European tour), and the Blackhawk Chorus for over ten years. He was a dedicated Boy Scout leader, serving as Scoutmaster of Troop 236 in Danville, earning his Wood Badge beads, and serving on Wood Badge staff. He was recognized as Mt. Diablo Council Scouter of the Year, and was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Mt. Diablo Council. Roger was a classic car enthusiast and served as a docent at the Blackhawk Auto Museum for many years. Roger will be remembered for his penchant for organizing, his fierce dedication to the task at hand, and his ability to find a role for his woodworking in anything he was involved with. Roger is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sue Dornblaser Evans of Danville and now Walnut Creek, CA, his daughter Elizabeth Anne Evans of Acton, MA; his son and daughter-in-law Peter Billow Evans and Katherine Matlock Evans of Los Altos Hills, CA; his son Roger Jackson Evans III of Burlingame, CA; his daughter Sarah Evans Lewis and son-in-law Steven Lewis of Walnut Creek, CA; and grandchildren Elizabeth Larelle Evans and David Randolph Evans of Los Altos Hills, CA; Ashtin Sue (Cameron) Rock of Oklahoma City, OK; Arianne Grace Evans and Amelia Faith Evans of Laguna Niguel, CA; and Victoria Randolph Lewis and Benjamin Evans Lewis of Walnut Creek, CA. Services will be held at Community Presbyterian Church, 222 El Pintado Road, Danville, CA on June 24, 2017 at 11 AM. Roger will be interred at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon, CA. Remembrances may be recorded at Roger's guest book at Legacy.com. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Roger's name to the Boy Scouts of America.

Dear Sue and Family -

Please accept my warmest condolences...........Roger will be missed by many. I remember well the many wonderful times shared on Martin Point - and his great love of boating and the water, and his involvement with the Community House and MPIA. Many happy times during my teenage years were spent at the Evans cottage. Cherish the memories...........Thinking of all of you.
