DAN UCHIMOTO

Dan Uchimoto Oct. 9, 1921 - Aug. 23, 2012 56 Year Resident of Richmond Dan Uchimoto, 90, of Richmond, CA died peacefully at his home August 23, 2012. Dan was born October 9, 1921, grew up in Suisun Valley, CA and attended Armijo High School. He started UC Berkeley but left during his second year at the start of World War II. Dan and his family were interned at the Gila River, AZ relocation camp during the War. He was permitted to leave camp to attend Loras College in Dubuque, IA. Before graduating, he joined the Army and served with the famed 442 Combat Regiment, composed of Japanese American soldiers. Dan fought in Europe and received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman's Badge and Presidential Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Clusters. After the War, Dan graduated with Bachelors and Masters in Science degrees from UC Berkeley. Dan was a public health chemist for the State of California for twenty-five years. In retirement, Dan and his wife of sixty years, Elsie, were long standing volunteers at the Showcase, Alta Bates Hospital's thrift shop. Dan is survived by his loving wife Elsie, his son William (Marsha), grandchildren Adam and Audrey, brother Warren, sister Amy Naito (Albert), sister Laura Nakanishi, and 10 nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 6226 Arlington Boulevard, Richmond, CA on Thursday, August 30 at 11 a.m. with a luncheon to follow.
