Muriel McMurtrey
Sept. 18, 1920 - Mar. 25, 2014
Resident of Castro Valley
Muriel R. McMurtrey, 93, long time resident of Castro Valley passed away on Mar. 25, 2014. She was born in Waterville, N.Y. Her Parents, Myrna and William Landon also had a son, William. In the early 1930's the Landon family moved to Oakland where Muriel graduated from Oakland Technical HS in 1938. She worked for Southern Pacific Railroad from 1941 to 1946 then took a job with Safeway in the accounting department. A very loyal person, she retired from Safeway almost 40 years later in 1985. Her membership in the Association of Retired Safeway Employees provided much pleasure, especially during the annual luncheons when she would connect with Safeway friends. Muriel was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in San Leandro.
Muriel loved people, square dancing, reading and cats. Later in life her favorite activity was to meet a friend for lunch and a good visit. Muriel had no children of her own; her first husband, Dwayne McLeod, who she married in 1940 died in 1943. She was remarried in 1948 to Stanley Behrbaum who died in 1960. In 1962 she married Frank E. McMurtrey who died in Jan. 2000,
Muriel is survived by her niece Darlene Crabtree, grand nieces Kristine and Wendy Crabtree all of Grass Valley, CA; her grand nephew, Thomas W. Landon of Sahuarita, AZ and her three step daughters: Jayne (Merle) Conrad, Nancee (J.R.) Seifert and Patricia (David) Fenn all of Iowa. Muriel was always delighted to greet visitors displaying an ear-to-ear smile, a clap of her hands and a twinkle in her eye. She will be missed by many.
An entombment service will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 11 a.m.at Chapel of the Chimes, 32992 Mission Blvd., Hayward CA.
