Clare John Holtrop, 91, passed away on Saturday, at his residence home, Cypress Meadows in Antioch, CA following a brief illness. Clare is preceded in death by his wife Marian and daughter, Janet Phillips. Survived by his loving daughter, Susan Mulder, son-in-laws, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Clare was born on December 16, 1922 in Nunica, Michigan to Josephine Stark and John K. Holtrop and spent his younger years growing up in Western Michigan where he enjoyed both hunting and fishing. In February of 1943 Clare joined the Army and became part of what would be later known as the "Greatest Generation" serving in the in 184th Ordinance Depot Company with his initial training in Alabama and Florida. Clare went overseas in April of 1943, landing in Normandy, France during the D-Day invasion. During his tour overseas he would also find himself in Luxembourg and Belgium during the Battle of the Buldge until his honorable discharge from the Army in December of 1945. In 1952, Clare moved his family from Michigan to California where he worked as a US Postal Employee and a Walnut Creek Police Reserve. He was also a life time member of the Muskegon Masonic Lodge #140. Clare enjoyed spending time with his family and had a passion for playing cribbage as well as his time in the Police Reserves.
