Alan was born to Harry Murray and Ruth Sommer Clark on May 5, 1938 in Champaign, Illinois. He passed away January 29, 2017.
The family moved from Peoria to California in 1948 when Al was in third grade. He attended Edwin Markham Junior High and Willow Glen High School in San Jose. He earned a Bachelor of Science - with Great Distinction from Stanford University in 1960 and a Ph. D. in Physics from Princeton University in 1964. Alan was employed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and spent his entire career there as a High Energy Physicist.
Al married Eleanor Charlotte Farr in 1960 and they enjoyed 56 years together. Al was a loving husband and devoted father to their three children, He was a fisherman, camper, skier, and gardener. In later years he enjoyed Bird Watching and Genealogy. He and Eleanor made many trips to New England and the midwest in search of their roots. They were rewarded with revolutionary ancestors and Al became a member of Sons of the American Revolution.
Al and Eleanor were members of First Covenant Church in Oakland were he served as Trustee, Deacon and Usher for many years,
Alan is preceded in death by his parents, brother Stephen, sister Linda Landre and niece Casey Wahi. He's is survived by his wife Eleanor, brother David, children Stuart (Karen), Douglas (Karol), Allison (Thomas) Brown and five grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 11th at 2:00 PM at First Covenant Church, 4000 Redwood Road, Oakland, CA 94619, In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be sent to Bay Area Rescue Mission 2114 Macdonald Avenue, Richmond, CA 94801 or First Covenant Church.

So sorry that a schism in our parents' generation kept me from my cousins on the Sommer side. I only learned of Al's passing ( and Linda's) from the Stanford magazine that arrived yesterday.
