Joe D. "J.D." Ray(1927 - 2014)

Funeral services for Joe D. "J. D." Ray, 87, of Hereford, TX will be at 2:00 PM, Thurs., June 12, 2014, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with Leroy Thomas and John Henley coordinating with various family members as participants. Burial will follow in the Portales Cemetery with Ed Widener, Ross England, Tommy Joe Franks, Mitchell Cates, Layne Cates and Kenneth Payne serving as pallbearers. All of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and his nieces andnephews will be honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Wed., June 11, 2014 from 6 to 8 PM.

Joe Daniel Ray, known to virtually everyone as "J. D." was born Mar. 7, 1927, in Portales to the home of Dortha (Dopson) and Joe A. Ray and died June 7, 2014, in Hereford, TX. J. D. graduated from Portales High School in 1945, and shortly after that was married to B-Etta Miller. In Aug. 1945, he entered the U S Marine Corps, and served until July 1946. When he came home, J. D. joined his father in the family trucking business. Later he managed the Sweet Potato Association. In 1962, he was married to Margie Stockard. Joe later returned to the trucking business, where he worked the remainder of his career.
On Oct. 7, 1975, in Las Cruces, NM he was married to Jo Howard. They made their home in Portales until 1990 when they moved to Hereford. J. D. had to retire in 2004, when he suffered a stroke. J. D. was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portales, and served as a deacon for many years. He always enjoyed music and playing various instruments. He played the piano, the guitar, the fiddle and the harmonica among others. Dancing was also a great source of enjoyment, and he often went to the Senior Citizens Dances in Elida. Joe was a a great story teller, and there were many wonderful times with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Jo of their home in Hereford; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Jimmy A. and Fatima Ray of Las Cruces. Jody Wayne and Mary Stockard of Brownfield, TX, Ronnie Howard of Hereford and Forrest Howard of Grand Prairie, TX; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Carol Ann and Ed Widener of Alamogordo, Beverly Gotzinger of Mesa, AZ, Jada "Dene" and Ross England of Topeka, KS, and Bobbie King and Vicki and Dewayne Cates of Hereford; 27 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren; a brother, Dallas L. Ray of Dover, DE and three sisters, Ida Louise (Jim) Swires of Wadsworth, NV, Dortha Mae "Dot" Kilmer of Melrose and Jodie Faye Walker of San Angelo, TX.
He was preceded in death by both of his parents and by an infant daughter, Nicki Danelle Ray who died in 1968.
