Gerald Winston Crozier, 85, formerly of Portales, NM, passed from this life on Oct. 20, 2013, at his home near Amarillo, TX. He was born Feb. 1, 1928, in Hedley, TX, to Paul Haskell Crozier and Ruby Leah Shaw Crozier. The family moved to Portales in 1930, where he was raised on an irrigated rocky farm northwest of town. He plowed using a mule and "go-devil" and delivered newspapers by horseback. As young boys, he and his brother Kenneth straightened nails which had been removed from oak flooring his dad bought from an elevator in Texas. It was then used in the new home his dad was building for the family. Thus he developed a hard work ethic which prevailed throughout his entire life.
Gerald and Jean Stroud married on Feb. 14 1945, and proudly brought three sons into the world, Gerald L. (Butch) Crozier, Douglas W. Crozier and Tim Scott Crozier. They were divorced in May of 1985.
Gerald made his first truck trip as a driver at age 14 to California. He called it a wander lust, as he always wanted to see what was over the next hill. He also worked with his dad and brother Kenneth in the salvage business until 1954 when he moved his family of four to Mesa, AZ. He trucked and also ran a salvage yard. The third son, Tim was born while living there. The family moved back to New Mexico to Lovington and then to Albuquerque before returning to Portales in 1962. He trucked and farmed with his sons for many years and eventually established Crozier Trucking. In 2002, he extended his Crozier Trucking Shop to Amarillo, TX, and closed the Portales operation in Aug. 2007, due to the sudden death of his son Douglas. The Amarillo Business was closed in 2010. In the many years, and millions of miles of his over the road driving, Gerald never had a wreck and luckily never lost a driver in a wreck. He had also served as the area Dealer for Merritt Trailers.
Gerald was a member of the Church of Christ having been baptized into Christ at the Fourth Street Church of Christ in Portales. His mentors were Glen Coffman and Mayo Varnell. He has also admired greatly Kenneth Broad and he always longed for his best friend Jason Urton.
He married Lois Marie Lindsey in Dec. 1986 in Portales and they moved to Amarillo in 2002.
He is survived by his wife, sons Butch and Gail Crozier of Portales, Tim and Laquitha Crozier of Lubbock, TX., two stepdaughters, Shawne Riley of Albuquerque, and Sherri and Tim Allen of Midland, and a daughter in law Debra Crozier of Portales. He is also survived by ten granddaughters and one grandson, 15 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. His brother Paul Crozier and Fran of Houston, TX., and a sister Betty Foster of Dallas, TX., many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Douglas, his brothers Kenneth Crozier and Bruce Crozier, a sister June Towers, a niece Sharon Crozier and a nephew Russell Foster.
Arrangements are under the direction of Wheeler Mortuary of Portales. 575-356-4455, wheelermortuary.net.
