Larry Bickham (Grumpy) Obituary
Larry Bickham lost the battle with cancer, but won the battle with life on December 13, 2012. He passed away in his home with his wife, Rita, by his side. He had been visited by many friends and family members during his last few weeks. Larry and Rita lived in the same home that his grandparents built in the early 1960's, on land they homesteaded in the early 1900's.
Larry was born in Portales and attended Portales Public Schools and graduated from Portales High School in 1966. He was employed at Cooper Hobbs Chevrolet Dealership and excelled as a mechanic (except on Fords). Larry also drove trucks for Welch Trucking, JD Ray, Blakley & Sons, Butch Hammond, and owned and operated his own truck. Larry has been employed as Head Mechanic for Roosevelt County Road Department for the past 25 years.
Larry loved life, hunting, fishing, NASCAR, the great outdoors, and drinking beer with his many friends. All people who shared time with Larry benefited from his wit and knowledge and we were all lucky to have known him.
Larry is survived by his wife, Rita and their children, son, Lonnie Bickham and wife, Leisha, and children, Levi and Lauren of Portales, NM; Michael Johnson and wife ,Debra, and their children, Baylee, Jarret, Ty, Aaron, and Jessica of Clovis, NM; and Cindy Johnson and her son, Noah of Raton, NM. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara (Bickham) Hammond and husband, Mike of Nashville, TN.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
Larry started dating his long time friend, Rita Johnson, in 1989 and they were married April 10, 1993, at Rita's parents' home in Albuquerque, NM.
Please join us to celebrate Larry's life at Wheelers Mortuary on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at 10:00 am. Friends and family will be welcome to share memories of Larry's life during this service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of the Sandias or Roosevelt General Hospital Foundation.
