Henry Gentry of Portales was born June 29, 1926 in Leon Junction, TX to Lena and James R. Gentry.  He passed from this life early Sat. morning, July 22, 2006 in Portales.
The family moved from the Gatesville, TX area to Goodland, TX in 1935.  The next year, he and his father were struck by lightning, killing his father and leaving Henry unconscious for several days.  Soon after, his mother moved the family back to the Gatesville area, but returned to Portales in 1938.  He began a career in grocery stores at age 14 at Baty's Grocery.  In 1943, at age 17, he volunteered for the Navy.  He served in the Pacific aboard the USS Sevier during several of WWII's greatest battles.  At the end of the war he returned to Portales and began a 31 year employment at Grady's Food Market.  When Grady retired, he and another man bought the store.  Later he worked for Home Town Foods until it also closed, and then worked at Van Winkle's IGA and Super Save until he retired in 2004.  On Jan. 16, 1948 he was married to Barbara Sue Moore.  Henry was a member of the First Baptist Church as well the VFW and the American Legion.
He is survived by his son, Larry Gentry and wife, Delores of Portales; 3 grandchildren, Scott Gentry, Shawn Watson and Julie Watson; 5 great-grandchildren, Alex, Jacob and Sarah Gentry, Danielle Griffin and Dillon Watson; and a sister, Allene Bowman of Portales and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by both his parents, a brother, Perry Gentry, 2 sisters, Rosie Dean and Lucy Hollars and by his wife who died Jan. 30, 1993.
His ashes will be interred at a graveside service at 2 PM, Wed., July 26th in the Portales Cemetery with Scott Reeves officiating.  Members of VFW will serve as honorary pallbearers.
