Dennis Preston Allred

ALLRED, Dennis Preston On Saturday, April 2, 2005, Dennis Preston Allred died peacefully after a five-year battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed and remembered as a cheerful, loving husband, father, brother, friend, teacher, and leader. Born October 26, 1941 in Safford, Arizona, Denny was the youngest of three sons born to Ford and Maida Allred. He gained his incredible work ethic growing up on the family's dairy farm. After serving a mission for the LDS church in Argentina, he began his studies to become a teacher, combining both his talent for languages and his love for teaching. He soon met his sweetheart Jana (Lofgreen) and they were married in the Arizona Temple on June 20, 1964. They were blessed with ten children: Cassi (Alden Jensen), Mikki (Matt Fisher), Kenyon (Cynthia), Kristin (Seth Leigh), Ben (Holly), Bekki (Tyler Lyman), Nathan (Claire), Andy (Amy), and Amy (Joshua Greer), and Todd, as well as eighteen grandchildren plus three soon to come. He is also survived by his brother Bill (Diane) Allred. Preceding him in death were his parents and his oldest brother Dale Allred. His compassion and zest for life made him an extraordinary teacher. He taught high school and college Spanish and French, retiring from Mesa High School in 2001. He will be fondly remembered by many students he inspired, not just academically, but personally as well, especially those who came to know him as "Pa" on his summer trips to Europe. Denny had many loves and hobbies throughout the years, including flying, camping, running, biking, scouting, story-telling, gardening, and learning-especially languages, culture, and history. He had a deep sense of patriotism and enjoyed serving in the Civil Air Patrol. However, none of these interests compared to his love of the gospel. As a lifelong member of the LDS church, he served in numerous capacities-including Bishop, scout leader, seminary teacher, temple worker, and primary teacher. He had a genuine love for others and it showed in everything he did. Viewing will be held at the Elliot Ward building, 10256 S. Greenfield, Gilbert, Monday 6-8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Highland Stake Center, 3580 E. Houston, Tuesday at 10:00 am (additional viewing at 8:30 am). Burial will be at Pima Cemetery, Cottonwood Ln., Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements provided by Allen Funeral Home. Heartfelt thanks go to the doctors and nurses who have helped him through this challenge, particularly Mary and the other members of Banner Hospice Care. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances that would honor Denny's life: the LDS Missionary Fund or the LDS Perpetual Education Fund. Sign the Guest Book at eastvalleytribune.com
