Helen L. O'Brien Derksen

Helen L. O'Brien Derksen, 93, died Wednesday, November 30, 2005, in Mesa. She was born April 5, 1912, in Keokuk, IA, the daughter of May and Edgar Wright. Mrs. Derksen was raised in Hamilton, IL, and moved to Arizona in 1949. She lived for many years in Coolidge, AZ, before moving to Mesa in 1977. Mrs. Derksen was preceded in death by her first husband, C.R. "Pat" O'Brien, and her second husband, Clemens Derksen. She is survived by her daughter Molly (John) Shown; three grandsons, Jerry (Shelly), Joseph, and John; one great-granddaughter; four great-grandsons; and many friends in Illinois and Arizona. Grandma Helen was surrounded by her loving family when she died, and will be remembered by all who knew her as a feisty, independent woman with a playful sense of humor. She enjoyed watching sports on television, reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing the piano and organ, dancing, and being with her family. She had been a kindergarten and first grade teacher, a newspaperwoman and a high school bookstore manager before retiring to care for her grandchildren in 1977. In later years she volunteered in classrooms and in the library at Robson Elementary School in Mesa, receiving an award from the Mesa School Board for her work on behalf of students. The family wishes to thank Jones Family Care Home in Mesa for their care and kindness during Grandma Helen's final year. Arrangements are being handled by Allen Funeral Home in Mesa, and in accordance with her wishes, no services are planned. Sign the Guest Book at eastvalleytribune.com
