Smith, Margaret Post
Margaret Post Smith 4/17/1921-9/8/2016 Margaret Post Smith was born in Portland, Oregon on April 17, 1921. Her parents were Edward and Katharine Post. Her sister was Mildred Post Boesser. They lived in Camus, Washington, a paper mill town on the Columbia River, until Margaret was 13 years old. They then moved “home” to Palo Alto, California, in 1931. Her parents were raised in Palo Alto and there were a multitude of cousins and other family in the area. Margaret met her future husband, John Jacob Smith, Jr., at Palo Alto High School. Margaret graduated from Mills College in 1943 and then took a professional Girl Scout course in summer school at Stanford University. In September of 1943, Margaret headed East to New York City for a job with The Greater New York Girl Scout Council. John was at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Great Neck, Long Island. They were married November 10, 1943, in New York City. John was assigned to the troop ship USS President Polk as a navigator and sailed all over the South Pacific during World War II in the Navy. John returned home in 1946. The family moved to Davis, California, so that John could attend the University. 1949 found Margaret and her family in Lake County for John’s new job with The University of California Cooperative Extension Service. Their future included work in Santa Clara County, Yolo County, Placer County, and Sonoma County as John continued his job as a fruit and nut Farm Advisor. They retired in 1980 and moved to Foresthill, California. In their later years, they lived in Auburn. Margaret and John raised four daughters: Lynn (Peterson), Kathie (Dilley), Jackie (Johnson) and Martha (Hector). She had four grandsons, two granddaughters, and eight great grandchildren. Margaret was loved by all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed. Celebration of life will be held October 22, 2016 at 2:30 at Auburn Ravine Terrace in Auburn, California.
