Gladys W. Beninga

Gladys W. Beninga passed away June 5, 2013, in Auburn, California. She was born at Greene, Iowa, December 15, 1927, to Karl and Louise Kleinschmidt. She graduated from Greene High School and attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls. After that she taught six years at Fremont #5 rural school and two years teaching sixth grade at Monona Public Schools. In 1954 she married Marvin Beninga (son of George and Margarete Beninga). While Marvin completed his seminary training Gladys taught in a rural school in Arcadia, Wisconsin, where she taught 32 students in nine grades. During their married life Marvin and Gladys served churches in Granton and Neilsville, Wisconsin, American Lutheran Church in Jesup Iowa from 1960-1971 and at St. John's Lutheran Church in Preston, Iowa, from 1971 through Marvin's death in May 1982. During these years Gladys was busy raising their three children, teaching Sunday school, substitute teaching in the public school system and involved with the church's women's group.
After Marvin's death Gladys moved to Waverly, Iowa. For the next 12 years she taught at St. Paul's Lutheran school and tutored students. In 1995 Gladys returned home to Greene to care for her mother, Louise. When Louise passed away in 1997, Gladys continued to live in Greene. In 2001 she moved to California to spend eleven more years enjoying being with her three children, their wives and her four grandchildren. She enjoyed her time at the Oaks of Auburn retirement home and treasured the friends that she made while living there.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, her parents and her brother, Norman. Gladys is survived by her three children, Jim (Cheryl) of Meadow Vista, CA, Shelley of Weimar, CA, and John (Victoria) of Meadow Vista, CA, and four grandchildren, Luke, Kirsten, Patrick and Caleb and her sister, Norma of Greene, Iowa.
Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene, Iowa, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013. She will be laid to rest at Rose Hill cemetery in Greene, Iowa.
