Michael Joseph Byrne

Michael J. Byrne of Roseville, Calif., age 95, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at Emeritus, Hazel Creek in Orangevale, Calif., after a battle with lung cancer. He was born on March 29, 1918 in the Manhattan borough of New York to Patrick Byrne and Ellen (Lena) Heafy Byrne.
As a young man, Mike loved music and the theatre and attended the Irvine School for Theatre in New York City. He also studied at William and Mary University in VA before enlisting in the U.S. Naval Air Force on December 8, 1940 and serving as chief radio and radar man in the Pacific during World War II
. After the war, he received a BA in Government and Foreign Affairs from George Washington University and a law degree from LaSalle.
He married Betty Carroll in 1945 and they moved with son, Donald and daughter, Katharine to Corona, Calif., in 1951 when he received a promotion at the National Bureau of Standards. After divorcing in 1952, Mike moved to Los Angeles for work and while there, acted in theatre productions at the Santa Monica Playhouse, the Pasadena Playhouse and the Laguna Playhouse.
In June of 1956, Mike married Ruella Robertson and moved to Anaheim, Calif., where they resided for the next 30 years raising their daughters, Margaret and Mary. He worked for Rockwell International during the time of their Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. After retiring from Rockwell in 1970, he became a certified financial planner and a teacher at Lumbleau Real Estate School. After 13 years at Lumbleau, he and Ruella retired to Edmonds, Wash., to enjoy the Pacific Northwest and their nearby relatives in Victoria and Vancouver, the Templeman branch of the family.
After Ruella's passing in 2000, Mike again relocated to be nearer to his children in Northern California and Oregon. He continued to indulge in his hobbies of music, theatre and investing as well as spending time with family and watching the odd hockey and baseball games.
He was preceded in death by his son, Richard Michael Byrne, his brothers, James Byrne, Edmund Byrne, Jack Byrne, and Thomas A. Byrne; his sister Patricia Byrne Kerwin; Betty Carroll Byrne, the mother of his children Donald and Katharine; and Ruella Robertson Byrne, his beloved wife of 44 years and mother of his children Richard, Margaret and Mary.
He is survived by his sister Kathleen Byrne Horstmeyer, 94; four of his five children, Donald Byrne, Katharine Byrne Holt Benner, Margaret Byrne Boul DeMain and Mary Byrne Elturk; his nine grandchildren, Steven Holt, David Holt, David Boul, Rachelle Boul Brown, Bryan DeMain, Danielle DeMain Sabo, Arwa Elturk Hurley, Sara Elturk, and Laila Elturk; his nine great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Holt, Samuel Holt, Abigail Holt, Benjamin Holt, Joshua Holt, Bryson DeMain, Drake DeMain, Sean Hurley and Maura Hurley.
There will be a vigil and reception at Lambert's Funeral Home in Roseville between 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, September 30, 2013. The funeral Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Citrus Heights, Calif., will be held on October 1, 2013 at 10 a.m. followed by an Internment Ceremony at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon at 3 p.m.
