Loving and beloved father, husband, brother, uncle and friend, Gene passed away on the day after his 81st birthday from the complications of his lifelong nemesis, skin cancer.
Born in Los Angeles to Russell Stone, Sr. and Odette Stone, Gene's early years were spent in Pasedena, Shell Beach and Greely, Colorado. He served in the US Air Force
and entered the Pasedena Police Department at the age of 25, where he became a sergeant at 31 and survived adventures that formed the basis of his legendary story-telling. In 1971, Gene joined friend and Chief, Mike McEwen, and became the Assistant Chief of Police at UC Davis. Four years later, he became Chief of Police at UC Santa Cruz, where he created a police department that acted as the "palace guard" to protect those university students. In 1981, Gene met and married Anne. Just before and just after his retirement from UCSC in 1991, Gene and Anne welcomed sons Russell and Michael into the world.
After his police retirement, Gene and his family moved to Meadow Vista, Calif., where Gene became a favorite school bus driver, picking up and delivering his own sons along with the other students.
Gene was proceeded in death by his father Russell and his step-mother Ruth, his mother Odette and step-father Steve Chudzinski, his sister Lorraine and brother-in-law John Cullen.
He is survived by his wife Anne, sons Russell and Michael, daughter Sandra Whatley, sister Cheryl Sturges, granddaughter Lauren, grandsons Jon and Robert and nieces and nephew Julie Brown, Stacey Dykema and Dawn Andrew. Gene will be remembered and celebrated at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 3 at the Auburn Garden Ampitheater.
