Vona Louise Stofleth, a longtime resident of Auburn, California area, walked on to be with her ancestors on July 15, 2013, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Vona was born May 15, 1936, in St. Ignatius, Montana to Worley Buchanan and Louise Michel Olsen. She was a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation.
She was the granddaughter of Mitch Michel and Sophie Finley, great-granddaughter of Louise Finley, a respected elder of the tribe who lived to age 113, and a 1st cousin of Francis Stanger.
Vona attended the Ursuline Catholic School on the Flathead Reservation in Montana, until age 8, when she rejoined her mother and siblings in the Seattle-Tacoma Washington area. After attending Stadium High School she met and married Ronald Morgan and together had a son, David Brian Morgan and a daughter, Patricia Louise Morgan.
Divorced by the late 1950's, Vona moved to San Diego, Calif., where she met and married Lawrence William "Bill" Stofleth. Together they had five children: Timmy, Tommy, Tammy, Randy and Tonya. Bill and Vona traveled and lived in Illinois, Texas, and Arizona, before returning to Southern California. After a short time in Orange County they decided the northern area of the state was the place to be. They found beautiful Placer County and called it home. Vona remained a homemaker and devoted mom her entire life.
Vona was preceded in death by her spouse, Bill Stofleth; former spouse, Ron Morgan; son, David Morgan; her parents, Worley Buchanan and Louise Michel Olsen; and siblings, Dorothy Anderson, Isolene "Betty" Cantrell, Yvonne Guthrie, Lorraine Sullivan, Walter Worley "Sunny" Buchanan, Donavan Lee Irwin, and Charlotte Ann Trujillo. She is survived by her siblings, Tony Anderson of Pyallup, Wash., Dona Melchior of Lakewood, Colo.; children: Patty Morgan of Tacoma, Wash., Tim and Tom Stofleth of Auburn, Calif., Tammy Benge of Gridley, Calif., Randy Fabian of Sandwich, Il, and Tonya Gattuccio of Menifee, Calif.; grandchildren: Amy Kalama-Imamura of Olympia, Wash., Celeste Kawasaki of Tacoma, Wash., Lisa Fuller, Carol Stofleth and Lilly Stofleth of Auburn, Calif., Nicole Cash, Kayla Stofleth and Matt Stofleth of Grass Valley, Calif., Kindra Stofleth of Roseville, Calif., Gabrielle Stofleth of Alta Sierra, Calif., Robert Benge of Seattle, Wash., Alisha and Tommy Benge of Olivehurst, Calif., Holly Tolleson of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Reno Fabian of Sandwich, Il. She also had 16 great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and extended family.
