Lawrence Payne
1932 - 2013

On February 25, 2013 Lawrence Halleck (Hal) Payne passed away with his wife Lois of 40 years by his side. Hal was born in San Francisco to Larry and Lucille Payne on May 31, 1932. He enlisted in the Navy, serving during the Korean War from 1951-955. He spent a year in the Philippines and the rest of his time on the heavy cruiser USS Rochester.
Hal came to Auburn in 1958, where he started several businesses on the two sides of Hwy 49. He first opened a tool rental business in a street car on the west side of Hwy 49, which later became Ross Lumber and Hardware, where he worked along side his father, Larry. The hardware store was run successfully until Hal decided to turn it into a furniture store and an outdoor flea market on the weekends, with the help of his daughters. When the store burned down, Hal leased out the property to several car lots, and a mobile home dealer which is still open and running now.
Hal turned to his first love of boating and began traveling with his wife Lois during the next several years. They traveled as far South, on their boat the "Lucky Us", as Mexico, and as far North as Canada and into Alaska.
The urge to start another business came in 2012 when Hal opened up the Auburn Park and Sell, located on the East side of Hwy 49, which he was running with his two daughters until he passed away. His daughters Barbara and Dorene will continue to run the business.
Hal was a cancer survivor in 2012 but suddenly succumbed to pancreatic cancer this month.
Hal is survived by his three daughters, Dorene Kidd (John) of Auburn, Barbara Silva of Auburn, and Louann Adams (Paul) of Foresthill; 10 grandchildren: Jolene Foreman, Adam Watson (Erin), Julia and Heather Watson, Doug, Greg, and Shannon Lauder, Logan and Vanessa Silva; and seven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Harold Rosenberg (Cindy); nieces, Stacy and Amber Correa; nephews, Sam Correa and Michael Rosenberg (Lissette); and great-nephews, Caiden and Keith. Hal is preceded in death by his grandson Eddie Kidd.
Funeral services will be held at the Home of Peace Cemetery at 6200 Stockton Blvd in Sacramento Calif., on February 28, 2013 at 1 p.m.
