Doreen HUGHES

HUGHES, Doreen
On October 31, our beautiful Doreen 'flew away' after a wonderful, meaningful life. She died, as she had lived, in the warm embrace of her loving family.
Born in Stettler, Alberta, to Bertha and Arthur Lincoln, Doreen shared a happy childhood with siblings, Irene and Roy, enjoying fun-filled friendships, athletics, and sunny summers at the 'Three L's' at Sylvan Lake. An adventurous spirit, Doreen pursued a career in Calgary, and then Edmonton, before marrying George Hughes in December 1951. For the next 61 years, Doreen and George built a beautiful life together focused on family, friends, and community. Doreen was a fantastic wife to George, proud of all he did and always ready to leap into the next adventure. Doreen shone as a mother to Brent, Brian, and Karen, making life sparkle with her warm abundant love, sunny outlook, and zest for life. Above all, she believed in her children, helping them realize their dreams. Despite a busy life as a wife and mother, Doreen built a successful 25-year career as a librarian for Edmonton Public Schools. A lifelong 'bookworm', she loved seeing children discover the joy of reading, stories, and imagination. In later years, Doreen thrived as Grandma to Lynden, Dallan, Leah, Thea, and Sam, taking pride and delight in their budding personalities and talents, and showering them with hugs, brownies, and muffins. When George and Doreen retired in the early 1990s, they relished time to spend with family, travel, volunteer, and relax at Sylvan Lake. In 1994, Doreen fulfilled a life-long dream, graduating from the University of Alberta with a B.A. Throughout her life, Doreen believed deeply in contributing to community and those in need, living by the golden rule and volunteering with dozens of organizations - especially the Heart and Stroke Foundation; Cancer Society; The Hope House at the University of Alberta; Sports Central; and the Alberta Special Olympics. In her final years, Doreen's great-grandchildren - Zackary, Abigail, Zoe, Anna, and Nash – were a special blessing, reassuring us that Doreen's warm smiles, gentle laughter, and exuberant spirit will live on.
Doreen's family is deeply grateful to so many friends, extended family, and colleagues who visited and supported her in recent years, and to all those who cared for her at the Devonshire Care Centre; Nurse Next Door; Ashbourne Assisted Living; and the Good Samaritan Seniors' Clinic and CHOICE Program. We will be forever grateful for your compassion, kindness, and friendship that did so much to brighten Doreen's days.
A Celebration of Doreen's Life will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home – Edmonton South, 4820 Meridian Street, Edmonton (Meridian Street can only be accessed by heading SOUTH on the Anthony Henday - Hwy 216.
