Robert SOLINGER Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal from Dec. 12 to Dec. 13, 2014.
SOLINGER, Robert Edward
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Bob Solinger ("Solly") on December 10, 2014 at the age of 88. Bob was born in Star City, Saskatchewan on December 23, 1925. He is predeceased by his parents John and Elizabeth; brothers John, Herbert, George, and Anthony; sisters Hazel (Sills), and Mary (Von Alton) and his loving wife Jean of 47 years. He leaves behind his brother Roy of Winnipeg, and many nieces and nephews who remember Bob as a loving and supportive uncle.
Bob was an outstanding athlete, and will be fondly remembered for loving a "good game of anything." Bob had a 25 year hockey career and played 99 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs. After retiring from professional sport, Bob worked for the Alberta Government, and continued to play hockey locally. During those years, Bob and Jean hosted countless gatherings at their "summer paradise" at Pigeon Lake for friends and family. There they created precious memories for all who shared in their generous hospitality. Bob was a hard worker, and worked tirelessly to keep his home in Edmonton and the cottage at Pigeon Lake in top shape.
Over the past 24 years, Bob spent many happy winters in Arizona. In the summer, his Alberta home for the past number of years was Spruce Grove. No matter where Bob landed, he was appreciated for his sense of humor, his generosity, and his kind and friendly manner. And as Bob recently reflected: "We had a lot of fun!"
The family would especially like to thank Jackie and Dave Hodges, and Darlene Angus for their friendship, kindness, and support to Bob over the past months.
Reverend Martin Carroll will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph's Basilica, 10044 – 113 Street, Edmonton. A Celebration of Life will also be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Spruce Grove Royal Canadian Legion, 215 McLeod Avenue, Spruce Grove.

Solly will be deeply missed by all of his "Dollbeer" family in Mesa Arizona. We all have many fond memories of times spent golfing with him and he was always up for a happy hour, telling jokes and just enjoying everyone's company. He will be missed deeply!

To the Solinger family:

I remember like it was yesterday when Bob came to Edmonton to play with the Flyers. He was not only an outstanding hockey player and athlete but a model citizen and one to whom all who were his friends looked up to and admired for all the right reasons. He was a man of integrity and gave much of himself to all who came into contact with him. He was 10 years older than I and he was truly my hero. I was saddened to hear of his passing. I am sorry I could not attend the funeral mass to express my personal condolences but hopefully this short note in some small way serves that purpose. May Bob rest in peace – a peace he so much deserves.

Fond memories playing with Solly during Edmonton Flyers time. Solly was a very very good defenseman. He was also a very funny man with good sense of humor. He will be missed by all.
