It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Drew Sutherland. Drew passed away peacefully on Tuesday night with his family and friends present.
Drew is survived by his wife Sue and their four children, Tala, Tylen, Rhys and Arwen.
Drew has been a pillar of the University of Alberta since he was recruited to the Division of General Surgery in 2005. He was a gifted educator and clinician. He served as the Assistant Program Director in the General Surgery Residency Program from 2008 to 2013 and was promoted to Clinical Associate Professor in 2011. He has been instrumental in the education of medical students and residents and has received numerous teaching awards for his efforts. He was loved by all nurses and allied health professionals who worked closely with him throughout the hospital.
Drew provided exceptional care and attention to the patients in the Acute Care and Emergency Surgery program at the University of Alberta Hospital. The quality of care that he provided has become a standard to which many are held. He recently received the Physician of the Year Award from the Edmonton Zone Medical Staff Society, and was immensely proud of this honour.
A viewing will be held at 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home, 10011 – 114 Street, Edmonton.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Bonnie Doon Stake Centre, 9010-85 Street, Edmonton.
In lieu of flowers, a fund is being established to help support his children in their future educational endeavours. My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this amazing human being. He had a generosity of spirit that touched so many people that he saw day in and day out. I knew Dr. Sutherland as a mentor during my surgical training, and have thought of him fondly many times since. Drew was a great teacher, mentor and friend. The legacy that he built in medicine, surgery, & mentorship will continue to inspire all who have had the honour of knowing him, to live with humility, gratitude, and to just have fun. Drew inspired living life to the fullest!! - that will not be forgotten.

I didnt know Dr. Sutherland as well as so many but he always made me smile when he was around. And even though I didnt know him really well, he seemed to always remember my name, no matter where I was!! Seems like something so silly but to me, it meant so much!! There are no words that are adequate. I am one of so many whose lives are better for having known and loved Drew. He lived big, inspiring others to push the limits. His sense of humor never wavered through life's trials. He was a gifted doctor and a most loving and loyal husband, father and friend. We will spend everyday for the rest of our lives missing him.

I used to go to school with Drew at U of A, he was always such a great guy and provided the comic relief in many a lab or class! He loved you so much, I will never forget the story of you guys going to Utah and the cassette tape of (if I recall correctly?) The Police got whipped out of the window by you as Drew had played that cassette tirelessly!
Everything Drew did was with passion, from how he lived his life to loving you and the kids and how he treated others.

Charismatic is one word to describe Drew. He made you feel special and didnt judge you by your status or position in society. He loved games and rarely could be beat. Well known to be the easygoing Doc that could still be kind at 4 am on call. Sue made huge sacrifices to support him and the 4 children in all the years of University. I worked with Drew when he was a junior surgery resident and I was a hospitalist at the Royal Alex. He helped me with a sick patient and a very difficult family, for which I will be forever grateful. He was kind, patient, so smart, and compassionate. He obviously loved the field of medicine and wanted to share his knowledge with everyone. He was quick with a smile or witty comment. What can I say, I have known you since you were a resident. It was very evident that you were someone special even at that time. Your sudden and abrupt passing has left a large hole in my heart. Drew was the person in our class who would immediately light up the room. On our first day if med school he stood at the front and started going through the rows in Snell Hall and calling our names as he worked to learn all 108 of them between lectures. I'm sorry to hear of Drew's passing. He was always kind to me when Cassie, Shep and I would visit your family. He was a great man. I have good memories of him MC'ing our wedding.

Dr. Drew was such a pleasure to work with when he needed our Diagnostic Imaging services. I have fond memories of him making me laugh on a night shift when there really wasn't anything to smile about anymore.. My sincerest condolences to his wife and children, and know he will be remembered as a great, GREAT guy.

Drew is a heart warming teacher at work, home, and in the Church! He adored and loved his wife and children completely and they will always have him in their hearts and minds - they have been blessed to have Drew in their lives - we are all blessed! Thank you Drew for your exemplary life among us - we are grateful to a loving Heavenly Father for sharing you with us all.
