My thoughts and prayers are with the family of this amazing human being. He had a generosity of spirit that touched so many people that he saw day in and day out. I knew Dr. Sutherland as a mentor during my surgical training, and have thought of him fondly many times since. Drew was a great teacher, mentor and friend. The legacy that he built in medicine, surgery, & mentorship will continue to inspire all who have had the honour of knowing him, to live with humility, gratitude, and to just have fun. Drew inspired living life to the fullest!! - that will not be forgotten.
My sincerest condolences to his wife and children. May you receive some comfort knowing the deeply positive & lasting impact that Drew had on myself, and so many others.

I didnt know Dr. Sutherland as well as so many but he always made me smile when he was around. And even though I didnt know him really well, he seemed to always remember my name, no matter where I was!! Seems like something so silly but to me, it meant so much!! Thank you for not making me feel like 'just another nurse'!! You will certainly be missed!

There are no words that are adequate. I am one of so many whose lives are better for having known and loved Drew. He lived big, inspiring others to push the limits. His sense of humor never wavered through life's trials. He was a gifted doctor and a most loving and loyal husband, father and friend. We will spend everyday for the rest of our lives missing him.
Joy will come from seeing his smile through his beautiful children and sharing all the stories that will continue to make us laugh. What a legacy he left for his family! Sincerest condolences dear Sue, Tala, Tylen, Rhys and Arwen.

Some men are very intelligent, some funny, some huge hearted. There are men with personality, men with charisma, men with unforgetable presence. You didn't have to spend much time around Drew Sutherland to know he had a lions share of all of the above.
God speed peace to you and healing to your family.

Sue,
I used to go to school with Drew at U of A, he was always such a great guy and provided the comic relief in many a lab or class! He loved you so much, I will never forget the story of you guys going to Utah and the cassette tape of (if I recall correctly?) The Police got whipped out of the window by you as Drew had played that cassette tirelessly!
Everything Drew did was with passion, from how he lived his life to loving you and the kids and how he treated others.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, farewell Drew.

The loss of Drew is tragic not only for his family, friends and patients, but for the medical community as a whole. I had the privilege of working with him during his residency. Most residents just come and go, but Drew left a mark on all who encountered him. Simply an amazing man. Farewell, Drew.

Charismatic is one word to describe Drew. He made you feel special and didnt judge you by your status or position in society. He loved games and rarely could be beat. Well known to be the easygoing Doc that could still be kind at 4 am on call. Sue made huge sacrifices to support him and the 4 children in all the years of University. Very dedicated and hard working parents. We are praying for your little family to be comforted. God be with you.

I worked with Drew when he was a junior surgery resident and I was a hospitalist at the Royal Alex. He helped me with a sick patient and a very difficult family, for which I will be forever grateful. He was kind, patient, so smart, and compassionate. He obviously loved the field of medicine and wanted to share his knowledge with everyone. He was quick with a smile or witty comment. Thank you Drew for being such an inspiration and role model for medical students, residents, physicians, and other health care professionals. You will be greatly missed.

Dr. Drew Sutherland,
What can I say, I have known you since you were a resident. It was very evident that you were someone special even at that time. Your sudden and abrupt passing has left a large hole in my heart. Drew you were a wonderful example to your family and others of what a person should aspire to be. You made this hospital a better place to work. You leave behind your wife Sue, your rock, your love, your life and four beautiful children Tala, Tylen, Rhys, and Arwen.
I will miss:
Your infectious smile
Your uncanny ability to address everyone by name and make them feel important
Your absolutely brilliant mind and wisdom regarding health matters and life in general
Your burgundy scooter that some how you could maneuver around the cluttered hospital hallways without hitting anything or anyone
Your positivity and humility
Your bravery to battle such a devastating disease and never complain
Your dedication to your craft
Your love of sports and crazy bets with Tysen
Your updates on your family (such a proud dad and husband)
Your crazy candy stash in your office and your open door policy to stop by for a sugar pick me up when needed
No one will ever fill your shoes. Only one other man in my life has shown the courage and strength that you have and that is my dad who lost his battle to ALS in 1987. My heart aches at your passing. You will never be forgotten and you will be sadly missed. So for now, so long my FRIEND. See you again sometime.

Drew was the person in our class who would immediately light up the room. On our first day if med school he stood at the front and started going through the rows in Snell Hall and calling our names as he worked to learn all 108 of them between lectures.
