Bruce COLLINGWOOD Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Sep. 6, 2017.
COLLINGWOOD, Bruce John
May 16, 1953 – August 28, 2017
It is with great sadness that the family of Bruce Collingwood announces his passing on August 28 at the age of 64. Bruce will be forever loved and remembered by his wife Janis, their sons: Evan and Taylor, and Josh and Matt. Also mourning his loss are his brother Brent (Adele), and his sisters Anne and Laurie, his brothers-in-law Jeff (Sandra) and Rob (Lisa) and his mother-in-law Helen. Bruce was predeceased by his parents Margaret and John. He will also be missed by numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends Andy and Bill.
Bruce was a teacher, lawyer, and former Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. He had a bright presence, a sharp wit, and a wonderful sense of humour. He had an infectious laugh that could lighten any room. Bruce was an invaluable advisor to family, colleagues and clients. He had a deep love for conversation, great food, and good wine. He was a devoted husband and father, and regular family gatherings and holiday celebrations will not be the same without him.
Bruce spent the last seven years in Victoria with his wife Janis and their dog Winston practicing law. He had a successful law practice and thoroughly enjoyed finding solutions for his clients. He loved family and friends visiting the island and sharing time with them exploring places near the water. He will be missed by all who knew him and never forgotten. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date this fall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Edmonton Stollery Children's Hospital.

Janis and family. My deepest apologies for being so long in sending on my condolences, but I just found out. I was wondering about him so I googled his name and his obituary came up. I met Bruce during his time as an MLA, and found him to be one of the kindest, gentlest men Ive ever known. Did a great Elvis impression too! Please accept my deepest condolences.

Dear Janis, Sons, and Brent,
Although I have never met you,I feel the need to extend my sympathy to you at Bruce's passing. I was shocked and saddened at a life taken too soon. I was conscripted by our school principal as the science types were still vacationing to meet with Bruce and show him the ropes within his newly minted biology teaching position. Bruce had been wrestling grizzlies in the Swan Hills all summer gathering data for a wildlife study. With this meeting began a collegial friendship. We had such with the students by taking them on field trips and team teaching. In fact, I will never forget the morning we had to give out graduation diplomas. It was directly after a wildly successful year-end staff party and neither of us was fit for anything let alone convocation.Bruce made a special trip to our acreage to share that the "King" had passed away. We were constantly pulling pranks on each other. I was so proud when he became an MLA. Although we had not kept in touch since our teaching days,Bruce was always remembered as an outstanding colleague and I know you will miss him. It is the wonderful memories that will always keep Bruce in our hearts"

I was shocked to just hear of Bruce's sudden passing. I was a client of Bruce in the middle 2000s, really enjoyed his company and respected his astute legal advice. I will always remember Bruce as one of the great people I've met in my life. My sincere condolences to Janis all of Bruce's family.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Bruce's passing.
I knew Bruce during our high school days and saw him in later years when he was a successful lawyer in Edmonton.
I have many fond memories of being around him and the rest of the Collingwood family. He was such a nice guy with a ready smile and a terrific sense of humour.
My condolences to the whole family

My sincere condolences to Bruce's family. I remember the "twins" from high school, both wearing their Victoria Composite High School jackets. Who knew that years down the road our paths would cross again through the legal profession. I'm so sorry for your loss. Agnes Menczel
